ISSUE MEMO

Write a 1 page, single-spaced, well-researched, concise, and referenced memo on a
sub-issue of interest to you that falls within the larger issue you and your group will be
assigned. This memo is to be completed individually by each student on a unique sub-
issue. Consult the “Session 2” PowerPoint slides for tips on how to chose a sub-issue.
What should you cover in your memo?
1) What/Where is the problem? Using credible statistics (CDC, World Food Program,
FAO, Bureau of Labor Statistics, etc.), describe the problem. Start with a general
description of the macro problem and then talk specifically about the problem in your
chosen population or note that the problem is unique to the specific population. Does
your issue cause other problems? What is the cost (financial, social, etc.) of the
problem?
2) Who are the stakeholders in this issue? Describe the stakeholders and how they
interact as well as whether they are helping the cause or mitigate the problem. Are there
any politicians involved in or politics surrounding the issue? Are there stakeholders
who you think should be more involved but are not?
3) Why/When did this problem start? What are the processes and systems that may
be causing or influencing the problem? Policies? Economics? Environmental
Influences? Social Influences?
4) Describe the current state of progress on the Issue. Identify groups working for
and/or against the issue. Briefly describe what they are trying to do/have already
accomplished.
What layout should you use?
Your memo should be a series of headlines with supporting information following each
headline. Here is an example:
