Final Project: Artist Collaboration
Description: This project is a collaboration between you and a “professional” artist. Through a
blind draw, you will be given the name of a contemporary artist. The first step of this project is to find
out all you can about the artist. Focus on their artwork, their aesthetic, their process of working,
their philosophy/beliefs about art, etc… From this research, you are going to create a piece that
reflects both your own beliefs and aesthetics and that of the artist.
This is not a “traditional” research project. The goal is not to replicate your artist’s artwork. The goal
is to create a relationship between you and the artist. I want you to think about how the artist works
and what his/her goals are. Then think about your own ideas and beliefs about art and where they
overlap with the artists. Create an artwork that has elements pulled from, inspired by the artist, and
reflects your own beliefs and aesthetic.
What do you really like about the artwork? What really engages you about the artist and his/her
work? Maybe your tastes/beliefs are totally different than the artists. That is ok. Think about why
you don’t like the artist’s work. Look at the tiny details; are there any redeeming qualities for you?
Is there something buried there that you can identify with? How can you reach an understanding
with the artist and the artwork?
