Although termed as free African Americans in northern parts had limited job
opportunities and poverty was a daily problem. The few black skilled artisans could not find
employment in the Northern cities where they faced stiff competition from American
immigrants. Many free black men in the North served as servants, day laborers and tirelessly
sought temporal work where they could. Strong youths were forced to act as sailors and board
trading ships or whalers.
