NASA was chartered in 1958 to pursue the exploration of the area beyond the earth’s atmosphere.
The Apollo moon program resulted in the first manned moon landing by Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969. There were a total of six moon landings between 1969 and 1972.
The STS (Space Transportation System) program lasted from 1981 to 2011. It operated 135 space shuttle flights and ended on August 31, 2011.
NASA still exists today but no longer has any manned space capability and cannot even put a man on the international space station.
There are a number of private companies that are planning to offer transportation options outside the earth’s atmosphere – including trips to and from the international space station.
One point of view says that space transportation is a function of NASA (or some similar organization) and should not be privatized.
Another point of view says that space transportation is too important to be left solely to NASA (or some similar organization) and should definitely be privatized.
