Option 3: Documenting Social Change
In sociology, we often focus on social problems and social issues. In this activity, you will have the opportunity to learn more about how society changes, and how social problems are addressed through social movements.
Select one of the following topics that we have discussed, and identify an organization or movement that is working (or has worked) to change the existing social order:
Deviance (example: the movement to legalize marijuana, texting bans, or same-sex marriage could also fit here)
Race (example: racial profiling, racial discrimination)
Gender (example: the current protests in Saudi Arabia relating to women driving, breastfeeding debate, the glass ceiling/gender equalities, gender/sex/sexual orientation discrimination)
Family (example: marriage equality movements, changing roles of fathers)
Social Inequality (ex: minimum wage, the push for a living wage)
Food (example: food safety, slow food movements, the debate about labeling GMO’s (genetically modified organisms)
If you have ideas for a topic that is not included here, contact me and we can discuss whether it will work for this assignment.
1. Describe the ‘issue’ you have selected (why is this a social issue?)
2. Provide a brief historical look at the movement. In doing so, make sure to discuss the social forces that lead to the ‘problem’ (read chapter 16 as an example).
3. What organization(s) are working/have worked to change the existing social structure with regards to this issue? Identify the type of organization (see chapter 16).
In your write-up of this social movement, make sure to keep your focus sociological. In other words, don’t just provide a history of the slow food movement. Connect it to social forces within the culture that pushed us towards eating ‘fast food’ (ie, rationalization, McDonaldization of society), and discuss how this movement/organization is seeking to change something deeper within the culture than just the type of food we eat (ie, our values, norms, beliefs).
This paper should be no less than 2 pages (double spaced)
An alternate option
Instead of a written paper, create a video that visually depicts a particular social issue, the forces that lead to this becoming an issue, and describes how a group or organization is working (or has worked) to address that issue. Post your video on YouTube and send me the link via Blackboard
