Out of Class Speech Review Assignment
2 pages double spaced, MLA format for headings and pagination
Intro paragraph — begins by orienting the reader to the purpose/value of observation. Then, present
the who, what, where, when, why (purpose) of the lecture. End the paragraph w/ your evaluation
of the speaker (were they effective or ineffective) and your criterion.
Body — each paragraph should be devoted to a specific aspect of the speech — vocal
communication might be the 2nd paragraph while the 3rd paragraph is devoted to non-verbal
Conclusion — tell me what you learned (positive and negative) from this speaker and what you
hope to employ in your next speech. End with a clincher.
Attend the event and take a pen and some paper/observation form. Take note of the crowd– who
is there? How do they respond to the speaker?
How was his delivery? Too fast? Just right? Eye contact or not enough? Did he appear nervous,
comfortable? Use my observation form for all the aspects of delivery you should be evaluating.
Evaluate the content. How did you like the lecture? Did you understand the content? What
strategies were used by the speaker to help you to understand? Give some specifics. Did the
speaker use PowerPoint? If so, were the slides effective? Why or why not?
Give your overall impression. Was it worth a trip to the auditorium? Should you have stayed
home? Was it great and enriched your life? In short, would you recommend seeing the speaker to
someone else? Did the speaker use any techniques you thought you'd like to employ or
conversely would like to avoid? I want my paper about Aviator and author Bob Gandt that will discuss his book, The Twilight Warriors, which is the story of the largest land-sea engagement of World War Two. Gandt will also share stories from his interviews with dozens of participants in the battle.
