How the success-oriented society today differs from the idea of intelligence in the Bhagavad Gita

The scope of this paper is that of a descriptive cultural essay on the topic of your choosing. Ideally, you might choose a topic that is relevant to your actual major of study. For example, if you are a business major you may want to write about the contemporary impact of caste on industrial developments in India. You are encouraged to peruse The Bhagavad Gita and articles to first to discover several topics of potential interest to you and then proceed to do some independent research to find peer-reviewed scholarship on these topics. After narrowing down your possible topic you may want to contact the instructor to discuss the topic further and come up with some good ideas for a thesis.

A strong thesis statement is expected and the body of the paper should consist of evidence supporting your thesis statement. This evidence ought to have at least three sources:

1. Patton’s translation of The Bhagavad Gita (citing relevant passages in the translation, not the introduction, for your topic).
2. J. N. Mohanty, “The Idea of the Good in Indian Thought” in A Companion to World Philosophies. (Malden, MA: Blackwell Press, 1997), 290-303.
3. At least one peer-reviewed article (with the electronic link, if possible, or a pdf copy of the article turned in with the paper) of your own discovery. Use HPU’s electronic library services via Pipeline or physical libraries (HPU or UH).

You must use the above sources in a relevant and proper way that demonstrates your understanding of the topic, the readings, and the scholarship you refer to.

The main aim of this assignment is for you to tell me about something interesting about Indian culture, ancient or contemporary, in a way that is relevant to any of the broad range of topics covered by the assigned readings.

— Although I didn’t mention India in my topic, the essay has to focus mostly on the contemporary workforce in India and how they wish to become successful and rich doesn’t match up with what Krishna thinks about intelligence and prosperity.
I will upload the 3 mandatory (!) sources as additional material.
Please make sure to really focus on the Bhagavad Gita!
