Description of Affected Communities

The causes of mortality reported in Dallas County include cardiovascular disease, all cancer, chronic
lower respiratory, diabetes, unintentional injury, homicide, suicide, Alzheimer, influenza and
pneumonia, infant deaths, and fetal deaths (TDSHS, 2009).
Dallas County is located in north-central Texas. It is bordered by Kaufman and Rockwall counties to the
east, Tarrant County to the west, Denton and Collin counties to the north, and Ellis County to the south.
Dallas County is the largest city among its bordering partners and it is made up of about 902 square
miles of the primarily flat, heavy Blackland Prairie. Dallas County elevations range from 382 to 850 feet
above sea level. The water that is supplied to Dallas County for use and recreational activities are feed
by the following lakes: Mountain Creek, Lake North, Joe Pool, Lake Ray Hubbard, and White Rock Lake.
Dallas County is known for its tall grasses and array of different trees such as pecan and oak trees and
mesquite that are scattered throughout the area. Dallas County population as of 2010 census is officially
2,368,139. It is now the ninth densely populated county in the United States.
Dallas County was founded in 1846 and was possibly named after George Mufflin Dallas who is the
eleventh vice president of the United States. Dallas County is a very diverse place with a great mixture
of different races making it the third-largest county in the state of Texas (Maxwell, n.d.).

Fourteen percent (14%) of Dallas County residents live below the federal poverty level (FPL). This ranges
from 5% in Outer NE Dallas to 25% in both South and Southwest Dallas. In mid-2010, Dallas County
unemployment was at 8.9%, but 10 of 13 communities had unemployment at 6.2% or lower. 24.5% of
County residents have NOT graduated from high school. This ranges from 8.8% in Northwest Dallas to
48.4% in South Dallas. Dallas County is racially and ethnically diverse with 38% Latino residents, 34%
Caucasian, 22% African-American, and 7% Asian-American and Other. I HAVE
